Quantity and Quality?

Workplace Innovation and the European Union

The European Union’s Social Summit for Jobs and Growth held in Gothenburg during September 2017 was an event which, in the past, would have focused on ‘jobs, jobs, jobs’ at any price. Policy makers wouldn’t have cared less about the nature or content of these jobs.

A Stronger Future for EUWIN

During the final conference of the EU FP7 SI-DRIVE project (www.si-drive.eu), EUWIN organised a separate workshop to discuss its own future. As you know, the European Commission (partly) financed the first four years of the network. We are now in our fifth year and are maintaining the network through the efforts of our partners.

How to create a culture of innovation in your workplace

We’ve seen a real change in recent years as managers come to understand that unleashing the accumulated knowledge, experience and creativity of workers at every level can play an important role in improving business performance and giving companies the competitive edge. Yet this recognition is so often tinged with frustration that those same employees are not responding fully to the opportunities placed in front of them.

A Remarkable New Book on Workplace Innovation

EUWIN and its partners have produced a definitive volume on workplace innovation:

Oeij, D. Rus, and Frank D. Pot (Eds.) (2017). "Workplace Innovation: Theory, Research and Practice”, Cham: Springer International Publishing AG.

(Hard copy ISBN 978-3-319-56332-9; e-Book ISBN 978-3-319-56333-6).

Even the most innovative countries can improve on workplace innovation

Frank Pot comments on some remarkable outcomes from the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) 2017. While ‘firm investments’ (business R&D expenditure; non-R&D innovation expenditure such as machines and equipment) have increased between 2010 and 2016, the scores for ‘innovators’ (product/process innovators; organisational/marketing innovators) have decreased.

Does this mean that investments in ‘workplace innovation’ have also decreased?

Employers association says:

“No future of work without social innovation”

Early in October 2017, the World Employment Confederation or ‘the voice of the labour market enablers’ as they call themselves, published a Manifesto on the future of work. The title of this Manifesto is very encouraging for the workplace innovation community: “No future of work without social innovation. How to build open, inclusive, sustainable and enabling labour markets.”
